Understanding The Science Behind Selfies

No one is an exception when it comes to taking selfies. Many people who take selfies are often labelled as self-obsessed. However, a recent research has proved that there are three types of selfie addicts and not everyone can be termed as narcissists.

A study was conducted recently with more than 75% of the population being women. Participants were asked to answer more than 50 statements stating whether agree, disagree or have a neutral opinion about each statement.

After this, the participants were asked to rank each statement on a scale of 11 depending on their own beliefs. Finally, the participants were asked more questions about the statements to which they agreed.

The result of the research showed that there are three types of who love taking selfies.

Communicators
These are people who take selfies for the purpose of sharing it and to engage themselves in a conversation. The communicators use selfies as a platform for engaging themselves in conversation and communicate in a new manner. The communicators chose statements that meant they love taking selfies to show people where they are and to show what they are doing.

Self-Publicists
Self-Publicists use selfies for showing off and sharing places. One of the main reasons they share selfies is as a mean of maintaining their personal image. Their intention is not to mingle with other but to establish their self-image. The purpose of taking selfies is to show the world who they are and sharing selfies makes people accept them as themselves are some of the statements that the self-publicists agreed to.

The Auto biographers
For these people, selfies are a way of creating chronicles or stories of themselves. It is way to record memories is what auto biographers believe in. They are very different from communicators and self-publicists in the way that they do not take selfies for showing other what they are doing or getting themselves into a conversation.

Creating An Economically Responsible Environment

For the purpose of protecting marine life, Obama administration has stopped drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean. The announcement came just before the inauguration of the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that all the Arctic Ocean waters are under Canadian limits. Therefore, they are off limits for any oil and gas development digging.

Recently, The U.S. government has barred any oil drilling across 3.8 million acres of the East Coast that is under the control of the U.S. Only 2.8 million acres of the Beaufort Sea limits is open to drilling.

The Outer Continental Shelf Land Act of 1953 protects the Atlantic and Arctic oceans from drilling. Donald Trump will be finding it difficult to reverse this decision made by Obama. Because, President elect Donald Trump has said that he will be reversing Obama’s decisions as much as possible. Some of the cabinet ministers in the Trump’s camp have ties with fossil fuels industries.

It must also be noted that Obama and Trudeau made a commitment in march stating that Canada and U.S. will together protect waters so that future fossil fuel leaks are prevented. Also, this commitment prevents any economically irresponsible activity form happening in the Arctic. This act of withdrawing the oil drilling will help in preserving vital ecosystems and act as a refuge resource for species that are at risk to grow. It will also help in saving the fishes and create laboratories for scientists to investigate and explore the possibilities and impact of climate change.

There has been lot of criticism as well because barring drilling in the Arctic areas also jeopardises the national security is what their argument is about. Another reason is that it blocks many jobs and increases the cost of energy for many consumers.

As expected, the environmental groups are extremely pleased with the decision to bar drilling. These protections will be a difficult one to break for the new President elect Donald Trump.

How Remote Places Are Populated?

Looking at the map of Remote Oceania which is a region containing Hawaii, New Zealand, French Polynesia and Micronesia you might wonder how people manage to settle on places like this. They are located so far apart from the landmass and they are so far from each other too. Although these are some of the last places that human race has populated, it is still surprising that people managed to get there.

Looking at various evidences such as archaeological, anthropological, genetic as well as linguistic evidence suggests that people have reached there as early as 3400 years ago. There is not a clear estimate of which island was colonised first, it is still remains under debate as to where it originated from and what kind of strategies were used.

There is no concrete information on how people could have sailed to these locations due to the limited navigational option available those days. Settling in remote places such as these must have required many trips across thousands of kilometres of the sea. There is no idea on how the boat technology was those years and what was used the early settlers to get to these islands.

Another intriguing factor is how the colonisation process happened after a hiatus of about 2000 years. Because, after some time there was a pause in expansion leading to some expansions not happening. During this pause, somewhere between the 1,100 and 800 BP only Tahiti, Rapa Nui and Hawaii were occupied.

After conducting many voyage simulations and trajectories some concepts were theorized. The reason for the 2000 year pause in simulation raised from the fact that the area from Samoa has an increasing distance between two islands. To get to these locations, one has to travel against the wind which would have made it very difficult.

In future, these researches will continue to analyse on the colonization and how these remote islands were occupied.
