A guitar lesson should contain lots of videos and sound clips to teach its students the guitar in the simplest of manners. With the help of videos, people can check whether their finger positioning is right or not, and they can have a close look as to how the teacher is playing to make sure they’re doing it right too. Also, as videos include sound too, students can keep a check whether the guitar is in the same tune and that they’re using the right scale. If you are holding the guitar then you will notice that the top line, is the thinnest string, closest to the floor. The bottom list is the thickest one, closest to your face. A good way to remember them is like this: Eddy Ate Dynamite, Goodbye Eddy.

Now you got that down. Next, if you see numbers on the guitar then that is the fret you are supposed to play. For example:

Practice this like this: start on the far left and play the open string which is 0 then play the 3rd fret then the 5th. Continue until you are done with it. If you have multiple numbers above each other you need to play those as well at the same time. This is a classic song and a great way to get started with tabs.

Guitar tabs and reading them is just that easy. Dashes mean more time, more dashes more pause. Standard musical notation will get you somewhere if you are classically trained but it is a pain to read. I think this is the best way to read guitar music.

Reading guitar tabs is easy, fun and one of the best ways to progress. You can find all kinds of books out there to learn your favorite songs.

Sooner or later any serious guitarist comes to realize that a solid theoretical background is the only way forward. Your ear can only take you so far, that’s when your musical theory can kick in and remove any musical obstacles in your way to fully expressing yourself.

Seems pretty straight forward… just go to the music shop and pick up a theory book and away we go; away we go alright… pick up the wrong book and you’ll end up more confused than you ever were before.

Musical fact of life # 1: Not all theory books are created equal.

I remember when I started my first job, it was at a music store teaching music; I had a bit of a reputation as a player in the local area playing in dance bands etc., and since I had already sold quite a bit of musical equipment for the music store based on my track record they thought I would be the obvious choice; if
the store had a potential guitar or amp customer they would leave a message with my mum, then after school I would go down to the store and demonstrate the gear.

Everything started out fine, I stumbled and fumbled my way through the guitar lessons, I’m not sure who learnt the most me or my students I know I learnt heaps everyday mostly about how not to teach.

Anyway, very early in the piece the store manager informed me that if I was going to continue teaching for the store I would need to be “qualified”; I didn’t know exactly what that entailed but it did sound scary

As it turned out what he meant was I needed to be formally qualified… just being able to play the guitar was not good enough if I was going to teach guitar for them.

The good news was they were going to pay for my lessons so that was neat… there was even more good news I could go to the theory lessons instead of having to work at the shop.

So I began my theory lessons and very soon became frustrated, confused and perplexed… things I knew worked on the bandstand the night before didn’t match up with the theory lesson the next day.

The more confused I became the more determined I was about finding the “truth”; so I started studying with other teachers to augment my “paid” lessons from the music store… boy, did that make matters worst; it seemed as if each theory teacher had their own slant on things many basic concepts did not match up.

Long story short… after a lot of playing, thinking and research I discovered….

Musical fact of life # 2: there are different types of theory… in fact there are three distinct types of theory: classical, jazz and rock/blues!

These are very broad categories they are all important and the complete musician needs to be aware of their similarities and differences.

They world is full of traditional classical theory books so I won’t discuss them here. Modern theory as applied to improvisation and the music of our time is what I’m about… it’s great to know what happened 400 years ago but it’s unlikely to help you secure that rock gig next Friday night,

Title: Modern Method For Guitar – By William Leavitt (Berklee Press)

Fantastic explanations of how modes, cycle 5 and cycle 7 concepts work Jazz studies is a great introduction into the world of improvisation, if you have studied traditional theory this book will “blow the lid off” how you look at theory. Step by step instruction, very easy to understand. Highly recommended.

Jimi Hendrix was so far ahead of his peers when it came to playing the guitar it wasn’t funny. Growing up listening to the blues greats of his time he was a natural. Those who wish to get into guitar building can have an easier time of it now – more so than ever before, in fact. There are many resources available that can assist even those who have had no experience whatsoever at crafting from scratch something as intricate as a guitar. Of particular interest are schools which offer courses that focus specifically on this highly intricate and fulfilling art.

The basic materials needed to put together a guitar may either be bought at local shops or ordered online. With the proper training, preferably from skilled professional luthiers, one’s guitar can be assembled at one’s own pace. It also helps that a number of training facilities are replete with the machining equipment necessary to turn blocks of wood into a high-class instrument. In days gone by the guitar was a quiet, well behaved little instrument. In the nineteen thirties in America, you could barely here it in swing bands trying not to be drowned out by drums and horns. Sadly, it was fighting a losing battle. The guitar in acoustic form simply lacked the design dynamics to make it an instrument that was loud enough to be prominent in a full band situation.

All this was to change in Los Angeles, where it is said that George Beauchamp invented the first crude electric guitar. Hawaiian music, which he performed, is credited as the inspiration for the electric guitar. This is due to the fact that in Hawaiian music, the guitar is primarily responsible for melody. The sound of this humble instrument needed to be amplified.

The first electric guitar, as with most groundbreaking innovations, was met with some criticism. It quickly became apparent however that a new domain was created that allowed for guitarists to express their own unique abilities and style. The selling point of those early, crude guitars was simple… volume. Guitarist were now empowered to choose creative melodic lines as opposed to only strumming rhythm. Suddenly music was heard that showcased a new featured voice. The guitar was no longer satisfied with its obscure place in the band.

The design of the guitar was forced to evolve over time. The hollow sound chamber was prone to feedback. With the invention of guitar pickups, the next natural step in the electric guitars evolutionary process was the creation of the solid body electric. The progression was swift. The first mass produced solid body electric (the Telecaster) was birthed in 1950, courtesy of Leo Fender. It was called the broadcaster at first, but the company was forced to change the name because it was already in use by another. The popular Les Paul appeared in 1952 due to a collaboration between the Gibson company and guitarist, Les Paul. In 1954, Fender introduced the legendary Stratocaster, and the rest as they say…was history. These instruments started finding their way into the hands skillful artists who would amaze the world with their technical proficiency. The age of the guitar hero and the mind-blowing guitar solo had dawned.

The emergence of players like Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Van Halen would revolutionise the world of music forever. These and other iconic guitarists would inspire generations of young musicians who would change the face of popular music as they themselves had done. With electric guitars being affordable and easily accessible, most every boy (or girl) could mimic the techniques of their idols and propel this musical revolution into the future. The electric guitar had burst onto the scene, and it was clear that it would not be leaving any time soon.
